Napkins Sizes
Napkins sizes are available in various measurements and specific sizes are more suitable for certain events. Generally there are 3 different sizes: small, medium and large. There are no hard and fast rules for when to use what size of napkin. The size of napkin changes simply to accommodate the type of entertaining and to provide the most comfort for your guests. Let this be your guide. As well, the size of the napkin may change depending on how you would like to display them.
Small - The appetizer napkin is the smallest and measures 6" (15 cm) squared. It is designed to be hand held while being able to walk about and mingle. It is usually displayed next to the finger-food and allows the guest to hold their drink, food and napkin comfortably without the need of a table.
Medium - The cocktail napkin measures 10" (25 cm) squared and is designed for lighter meals. Cocktail napkins tend to be used for less formal occasions such as outdoor entertaining and open house gatherings. They can be used for either sit down meals or walking about/mingling occasions, however the appetizer napkin is still the better design for the latter as it is easier to hold less in your hand when walking about.
Large - The dinner napkin is the largest with the usual size being 20" (51 cm) squared, however they can measure as long as 24" (61 cm) squared. Formal dining experiences use the dinner napkin. They can be displayed various ways on the table by the table setting. The guest usually places the napkin on their lap (or the server does this for the guest) prior to the meal being served.
